Zimbabwe wins men’s 4x400m relay gold at African Athletics Championships in Accra

Zimbabwe claimed gold in the men’s 4x400m relay at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships on Sunday, edging Kenya and Morocco in a photo finish at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The quartet of Gerren Muwishi, Dennis Hove, Thandazani Ndhlovu and Leeford Zuze clocked 3:01.11 to take the continental title. Kenya finished second in 3:01.34, with Morocco third in 3:01.35, a margin of just 0.24 seconds separating the top three teams.

The result gives Zimbabwe its first gold medal of the championships and adds to a strong season for the relay squad.

Earlier this year, the team ran 3:03.55 in Lesotho to qualify for the championships and ranked as the 10th fastest team globally at the time. Zimbabwe also placed 5th at the World Relays in Botswana and set a national record of 2:59.01.

Officials said the performance secured Zimbabwe’s position as the fastest national relay team in Africa heading into the second half of the season.

The African Senior Athletics Championships run through May 31 in Accra.
